People have different reasons for buying and collecting interiors books. You may be an interiors addict, who simply loves poring over the details and intricacies of other peoples’ homes. Perhaps you are looking for inspiration for your own renovation project or for giving your home an update. Or maybe you enjoy hearing the stories of how others live, and find it an escape to see inside unusual homes and elaborate design projects.
If I’m honest, I’m probably a mix of all three! I obviously love interiors, and when I’m embarking on a project of my own I will dive into my mini library of books, and it’s always intriguing to see the variety of living spaces that are out there in the world. This latest book, Creative Homes by Anna Malmberg and Mari Strenghielm probably falls into the last category for me, as many of the homes are so different to a typical British property, with the style and features of the building being specific to it’s location, or the size of property perhaps only being attainable due to where it is, and house prices or rent being more affordable.Â
That said, it doesn’t mean this book is only relevant for those who seek interiors-based escapism. Some of the European homes certainly have the wow factor, but there are some more modest homes where the owners have exercised their creativity and talents in design and making their own furniture and decorative items. The idea behind the book is to explore the uniqueness of the homes featured, which are all owned by creatives – artists, designers, photographers etc – and so this is what really offers up the inspiration and ideas that could be translated to your home or your own approach to how you decorate.
One of my favourite homes in the book is in fact owned by the co-creator of the book, Swedish photographer Anna Malmberg, where the earthy, natural palette is mixed with a bohemian, desert vibe. Despite it being a rented property, Anna and her partner have poured a lot of love and creativity into their south of France home. The simplicity and relaxed atmosphere is certainly something I’d love to emulate. How lovely is this outdoor seating area above?Â
Because I am moving house this year and gearing up for our next renovation project, I have selected the more modest examples here, the ones where I could see myself creating something similar. But, if you love the idea of stealing style tips from more elaborate properties, such as a converted garage with soaring ceilings in Montpellier with strong Moroccan influences, or an airy Mallorcan finca with incredible views, this book, with it’s beautiful photography, will offer you this and so much more.
