Over the last year or two I’ve gradually been switching my skincare routine to natural products – so those that contain little or no chemicals and are organic, ethical and cruelty-free. I’ve learnt through lots of reading about hormonal health, that it is a really bad idea to add hormone-disruptors such as parabens and phthalates into your body via products that are supposed to make you feel good. It’s a total contradiction right? I don’t understand why these were ever allowed to be used in products we use on our skin in the first place. Similarly with candles, the idea of burning something that is giving off toxins into the air we breathe is ridiculous when again, it is something that is supposed to contribute to our well-being. We all know about the issues associated with plastics in terms of both the environment and the chemicals that can leach into the product they contain, so again, where possible I’d much rather choose non-plastic packaging.

Choosing to opt for organic and natural products is also in line with my commitment to shopping with small independent brands as much as possible; it is generally more commonplace for these formulas to be chemical free and natural. Yes, they are often a little more pricey, but I’ve found by simplifying my routine, I use less products so it tends to balance out. Using a small selection of great quality products and drinking lots of water is much better for our skin that piling on a concoction of lotions and potions that promise the earth but instead are packed full of ingredients that are actually detrimental to our health.

The added bonus of choosing products from smaller brands, is that they usually look much prettier on your shelves too! If you are wanting to make the switch too or you already have but love to discover new brands to try, then here are 20 lovely independent well-being brands to check out.
